(Daily360.com) – During the George Floyd riots and civil unrest of 2020, the Democrat Mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, decided to create ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza’ in the downtown part of the city. A group of Republican lawmakers from both the House and the Senate are now urging Bowser to remove it due to actions and statements the group has made in the wake of the war between Hamas and Israel.
BLM activists have been vocally supportive of Hamas, going so far as to label Israelis as oppressors who run an apartheid state. Bowser’s $7.5 million BLM Plaza has a large sign as well as giant 35-foot-tall yellow letters painted on the street reading “BLACK LIVES MATTER.” The Republicans issued a letter to Bowser that referred to BLM as a “terrorist sympathizer group” that should not be celebrated.
The letter, signed by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representative Jim Banks (R-IN) among others, read that since BLM “openly celebrates” Hamas and its anti-Semitic attacks, the group is out of step with American values. They say removing the plaza will affirm the city’s conviction that anti-Semitism will not be tolerated.
BLM activists have stated on social media and other platforms that the Hamas attacks should not be condemned but instead should be “understood” as a resistance measure to what they call colonialism. Many have said that the entire 75-year existence of the nation of Israel has been nothing more than an apartheid regime that has kept the Palestinian people down.
Bowser has said in the past that she rejects “terrorism in all its forms” and has also stated that anti-Semitism has no place in society or within any individual’s “heart.” The Republicans included the statements she made in their letter, and wrote that they “wholeheartedly agree” and look forward to her order to remove the BLM markings and signage. Bowser has yet to respond publicly to the letter and she has not signaled whether she intends to take any action regarding BLM Plaza.
