(Daily360.com) – A 17-year-veteran of the Houston Police Department was shot several times while looking for a suspect. The officer, Sergeant Mauricio Valle, was canvassing an area in southwest Houston looking for a man suspected of committing multiple burglaries, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery in the area.
While slowing cruising in the area in his police car, Valle stopped the car. At that point a man walked up to the passenger side widow and opened fire on Valle while he was seated behind the wheel. Sgt. Valle sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the legs, arms and chest. However, he was able to return fire and killed his would-be murderer. That man, whose name has not been released, is described as a Hispanic in his early to mid 20’s. A woman who was with him that night was arrested at the scene but it’s not known if she has or will be charged with anything.
Responding officers immediately rendered first aid to Valle and applied tourniquets to his injured limbs. They say Valle remained calm throughout and all involved are crediting Valle’s ballistic vest for saving his life by preventing the chest shot from entering his body. Valle is currently recuperating at an area hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Last month in Houston an officer was shot during a freeway stop and was saved by a Good Samaritan. The 29-year old officer was left immobile on the ground during a gun fight with a man he’d pulled over. Despite the danger, John Lally got out of his car and pulled the officer off the road and to safety while the alleged shooter continued to fire at them. Lally said he reacted without thinking and felt he was in the right place at the right time. The suspected shooter tried to escape but crashed his car into several vehicles and after unsuccessfully trying to carjack another died at a nearby hospital hours later.
