(Daily360.com) On Wednesday July 17, Vice President Kamala Harris overtook President Joe Biden as the most likely candidate to be the Democratic party nominee for president according to betting markets. This happened as rumors and speculation increased that Biden would step aside as the nominee for the 2024 election.
On July 21, Joe Biden’s X account released a letter announcing his resignation as the presumptive nominee for the party in the upcoming election.
President Biden posted another message on X that offered his endorsement of Vice President Harris as his choice to become the nominee against Donald Trump in November. Former Senator and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton also issued an endorsement for Harris. Meanwhile, former president Obama favors an open convention and did not endorse any specific candidate.
In the aftermath of Biden’s June debate performance, there has been speculation about several potential candidates including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Both governors released statements thanking Joe Biden for his time serving as president and the several decades he served as a United States Senator. There have been no candidates that have expressed interest in running for the nomination against Harris as of July 22.
Following the announcement from President Biden on X, Harris’ odds jumped significantly to 84% that she will be the party’s nominee for the general election against Trump. Harris has yet to mention any names that she is considering as a running mate for the campaign. Polymarket puts North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as the most likely with a 33% chance. The betting odds also consider Governor Josh Shapiro, Governor Andy Beshear, and Senator Mark Kelly. PredictIt bettors put Governor Shapiro at the top of the heap as most likely to nab the vice presidential slot within a potential Harris administration.
The Harris campaign reportedly brought in $50 million in donations following Biden’s announcement and endorsement. Harris trails Trump by about two points nationally according to the most recent polling data.
