(Daily360.com) Two people were killed and 19 injured in a mass shooting that occurred at a Detroit block party on July 7. All of the victims were between the ages of 17 and 28. The injured victims include one 17-year old girl in critical condition and 13 in serious condition. The 22-year old suspect was shot in the leg and is in stable condition at the hospital. He has been taken into custody.
The neighborhood where the shooting took place is reportedly the most dangerous in Detroit. The police commissioner said it is concerning that these shootings happen regularly and considered a normal part of living in Detroit. He said the police usually make a statement on the first of the year that crime has decreased and then the cycle repeats. He added that nobody benefits from crime in Detroit, except for florists, hospitals, and funeral homes.
There is an increase in illegal block parties that take place in Detroit, and the police have announced new measures to prevent crime that occurs at block parties. Calls to the police for incidents at block parties will now be considered the number one priority. The police department has also created a new unit with 80 officers that will specifically work to prevent crime at illegal block parties. The city intends to prosecute individuals who host illegal block parties and the property owners.
Nine guns and over 100 shell casings were found on the scene and the police have confirmed multiple shooters were involved in the incident. Detroit’s prosecutor Kym Worthy said they cannot provide any more details regarding what happened at the block party, because the investigation is ongoing. She said the process is expected to take a long time, because there is a lot of evidence for investigators to sift through. There are no reported suspects yet in the case.
There were several houses included as part of the “unsanctioned” block party and three 911 calls were made during the mass shooting incident.
