Pentagon Warns of Rising Terror Threat

(Daily360.com) – The U.S. military has warned that a new terror threat is emerging in the middle east with attempts to “reconstitute” ISIS. According to the Central Command, there have been 153 ISIS attacks in the countries of Iraq and Syria in the first half of 2024. At this point in the year, the group is on track to double the number of attacks from 2023, a concerning trend in the re-emergence of the once prominent terrorist group.

Central Command has killed 44 members of ISIS and detained 166 during the first half of the year. Those numbers are part of the 196 missions that have been conducted to minimize or remove the threat of ISIS. Despite the continued efforts to tamp down the threat of ISIS, there are reportedly 2,500 ISIS members throughout Iraq and Syria.

Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla of the U.S. Central Command said the primary focus is targeting ISIS members that are conducting missions outside of Iraq and Syria. They are also focusing on ISIS members that are attempting to break other members out of detention in a broad effort to “reconstitute” forces.

Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S. mission to defeat ISIS in the middle east. As a result of the increased terror activity, the mission has changed plans. Kurilla said leaders were focused on protecting U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Syria, but the latest activity requires immediate action. Kurilla said that there have been significant disruptions to the mission of defeating ISIS based on the increase in attacks from the terrorist group.

ISIS is claiming responsibility for six deaths as a result of a mosque attack in Oman on July 15 that included three “suicide attackers.” At the same time, the Central Command is concerned about increased terror threats from Iran-backed Houthis. Within a 24-hour window, the U.S. demolished five Houthi aerial vehicles near Yemen and the Red Sea.
