(Daily360.com) President Biden’s milk restriction is facing a new battle after Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY), chair of the House Republican Conference, introduced legislation on June 26 to restrain a portion of his rule that limits access to milk.
Representatives Derrick Van Order (R-WI) and Josh Harder (D-CA) cosponsored the Protecting Mothers and Infants Access to Milk Act.
The legislation aims to remove the restrictions that prevent families participating in Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) from obtaining sufficient milk. Stefanik stated that she proudly leads the bipartisan legislation to oppose Biden’s limits for WIC families and their ability to secure nutritional dairy products.
Families struggle with the inflation-caused price increase when buying groceries, she said. The new Biden rule would further limit their ability to find healthy products. New York’s dairy farmers work hard to give their communities access to what they provide from their farms.
The Biden administration’s decision to finalize the Revisions in the WIC Food Packages resulted in significant reductions for WIC families. In that revision, the reduction in the amount of milk available to families on WIC was critical. The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans found that 90% of Americans didn’t meet the appropriate daily dairy requirements for healthy living, even prior to the new revision. Stefanik argues that the harm to WIC families caused by these restrictions is wrong.
In a letter from Stefanik and Representative Andy Harris (R-MD) to Tom Vilsack, the secretary of the US Department of Agriculture, they sought to receive an answer to why the USDA approved the reduction of the monthly allowable milk for WIC families in opposition to a congressional directive to not reduce the allowance.
Gregg Doud, the CEO and president of the National Milk Producers Federation, praised the representatives for their efforts in ensuring families receive adequate quantities of safe, healthy, and affordable dairy products. Other associations, such as the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperatives, have also lent their approval to their work, as dairy products are a very important source of minerals, vitamins, protein, and thirteen nutrients essential for consumers.
