Secret Service Director Cheatle Steps Down Ahead of Looming Impeachment

(Daily360.com) Representative Nancy Mace threatened to force a vote to impeach Kimberly Cheatle, the disgraced Secret Service Director who has now resigned from the position.

Cheatle has faced intense scrutiny following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and many lawmakers have called for her resignation. Following a House oversight hearing that allowed House representatives to question Cheatle, she issued her resignation.

Mace now says she is withdrawing the motion to impeach Cheatle and calls the situation a “mic drop moment.” Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene also provided comments following Cheatle’s resignation and said she will not “slither away” without facing accountability, which may include criminal charges.

During the hearing, bi-partisan legislators called upon Cheatle to resign from her position following the security failures at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania that allowed a 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to get a clear shot at the former president. Cheatle admitted in a series of questions that there were “colossal failures” with the Secret Service security protection on the day of the shooting.

In her resignation letter, Cheatle said she steps down with a “heavy heart.” Following her announcement, statements were released by President Biden and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas praising Cheatle for her decades of government service. Biden said that it takes “honor” and “courage” to be in charge of one of the most challenging roles in government.

The statement from Secretary Mayorkas thanked Cheatle for her 29 years of service and said she led the agency with “skill” and “honor.” He added that she is “deeply respected” by the people that work within the Secret Service.

Donald Trump responded to the resignation by saying that Cheatle did not give him proper protection despite several requests for more Secret Service agents to be added to his security team. Trump said he had to take a bullet for democracy. Cheatle told her staff before resigning that she takes complete responsibility for the lapse in security at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
