(Daily360.com) Donald Trump and his campaign team have claimed that he will put an end to the Russia Ukraine conflict within one day. Trump has repeated this sentiment since May of 2023 when he said he would stop Russians and Ukrainians from dying within 24 hours of becoming president. In the recent CNN debate against President Biden, Trump said that if Putin respected the United States president, he would have never invaded Ukraine.
Vassily Nebenzia, a Russian United Nations ambassador says that Trump is promising something that is not possible. The ambassador said the war could’ve been resolved in April 2022 when the two nations were very close to a cease-fire deal. Nebenzia said the Western powers that are providing support to Ukraine are what derailed the peace negotiations.
Nebenzia also denounced Zelenskyy’s peace plan and called it a “joke.” He said Putin and Russia have offered a cease-fire proposal that would have required Ukraine to remove troops from four regions and to walk back plans of joining NATO. Zelenskyy rejected that proposal and is not interested in surrendering land. The Ukrainian president called Putin’s offer an ultimatum.
Trump took his claim a step further during the presidential debate against Biden. He said that he would have the war resolved before he even takes office. Dmitry Peskov, a Russian spokesman, said that the Russian government is not in talks with former President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing war with Ukraine.
The two countries are not poised to meet an agreement anytime soon as they both have conflicting non-negotiable terms. Russia said it will not consider a peace agreement unless Ukraine agrees that four annexed regions from September 2022 belong to Russia. Ukraine said that peace is not possible unless Russia invalidates the annexed regions and recognizes the land as part of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has said that if former President Trump has a plan to end the war, he shouldn’t wait to work out the peace deal between the two countries.
