Biden Silent on Humanitarian Famine Crisis Leaving 150,000 Killed

(Daily360.com) Civil war, genocide, and famine have led to over 150,000 deaths in Sudan and the Biden administration has been silent. John Kirby a national security advisor for Biden’s White House was unable to answer the question about what the administration is doing to aid the humanitarian emergency in Sudan. President Biden hasn’t commented on the state of Sudan in over a year.

Nicole Widdersheim of the Human Right Watch was floored that Kirby didn’t have something more to offer in response to the question. She said the response was indicative of the administration’s failure to recognize the most significant humanitarian crisis in Africa as a priority.

Administration officials have indicated that Biden has made three statements regarding the Sudanese conflict since the start of the war, but the most recent comments made by the president were over a year ago. Meanwhile, the United States is embroiled in efforts to aid Ukraine against Russian attacks while trying to broker a peace deal between Israel and Palestine.

Since the fighting in Sudan began, President Biden has tweeted four times about the conflict. During the same time period, he also tweeted four times about the Kansas City Chiefs, the winning team of the last two Super Bowls.

Representative Michael McCaul of the Foreign Affairs Committee said there is more than enough evidence that genocide is happening in western Sudan. McCaul requested that the Biden administration set forth clear steps on negotiating a ceasefire and bringing the country closer to a state of peace.

Representative Ilhan Omar authored a letter to the president with signatures from over 20 representatives to encourage Biden to create a program that would allow Sudanese refugees to find safe harbor in the United States. Omar referenced the humanitarian parole programs that were adopted for refugees of Ukraine and Afghanistan.

A group of senators wrote a letter to the president in April asking him to enact sanctions on the Sudanese regime responsible for humanitarian crimes. Both sides of the conflict have been accused of committing war crimes during this active and ongoing fight.
