Costco Issues Urgent Recalls Causing House Fires

(Daily360.com) 567,000 phone chargers sold exclusively at Costco have been recalled following reports of house fires. MyCharge is the name of the unit that was sold in Costco stores from January 2022 to November 2023. The chargers were also available for online purchase during this time. Two house fires have been reported as a result of the now recalled chargers.

In addition to the house fires, there were a minimum of 115 returns of the charger for melting, smoking, sparking, and similar concerns that indicate the charger has the capability of starting a fire. The products were manufactured in China and then imported to Birmingham, MI before being sent to Costco stores.

The chargers have not caused any serious injury, but have reportedly caused $165,000 worth of property damage. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and MyCharge are telling consumers to not use the product. They can contact MyCharge for a free replacement.

In December, nearly five million BlendJet blenders were recalled after causing dozens of injuries. The injuries caused by the blender include 49 instances of burns and one laceration. There were 329 reports of the blade breaking and 17 fires that were caused by the blender. This device was also manufactured in China.

A USA manufactured mattress was recalled due to failure to meet flammability regulations. The CPSC determined the Nap Queen Sleep Victoria Hybrid Mattresses to be a fire hazard, but did not have any existing reports about fires involving the mattresses.

In August of 2023, brand name dehumidifiers were responsible for 23 fires and 688 overheating incidents. More than 1.5 million units were recalled under name brands such as GE and Kenmore. These dehumidifiers were also manufactured in China.

The CPSC lists all existing recalls on their website, including a search function. Since the beginning of 2024, there have been 17 recalls from goods manufactured in China for fire hazard concerns. Some of the items don’t meet the flammability requirements, while others have reported examples of fires started from using or charging the product.
