U.S Military Strikes Houthi Rebels in Retaliation

(Daily360.com) The U.S. is attacking radar sites operated by the Houthi rebels of Yemen in retaliation for the Houthi been attacks on maritime vessels and commercial boats.

U.S. officials say the Houthis are specifically targeting boats that are providing aid to Israel. The rebels are against the Israeli strikes in Gaza and are doing coordinated strikes in the Red Sea as part of their protest for the ongoing war.

A U.S. merchant sailor and boat were lost earlier in the week, which prompted the U.S. to begin striking the Houthi radar sites. The Houthi rebels reportedly are also striking ships and vessels that are not involved in the Israel Gaza conflict. Approximately half of international cargo boats rerouted from this region to avoid the conflict. The U.S. has demolished two drone boats that were carrying bombs. They also took down a flying drone that was launched by the Houthi rebels.

The Houthi rebels have reportedly been attacking ships in the Red Sea since November in response to the Israel and Palestine war. The group has failed with the majority of their strikes since that time period, but have managed to hit four commercial vessels from the U.S. according to a March statement from the Pentagon.

The Defense Intelligence Agency reported that the new route adds 11,000 miles and $1 million in fuel costs to the trip. This is better than the costs that would be associated with traveling through the region where the Houthis are actively attacking vessels in the Red Sea. The extra costs of insurance to travel through the conflicted Red Sea zone would be financially debilitating, so rerouting the vessels is the best option.

65 countries have been affected by the supposed targeted attacks by the Houthi rebels. 29 countries have rerouted their ships from the area. This shows that the group has difficulty determining which vessels should or shouldn’t be targeted and it makes the voyage dangerous for boats from any country.
