Widespread Recall of Lactaid Milk

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of Lactaid milk across 27 states. HP Hood LLC, a Massachusetts-based dairy company, issued the voluntary recall after discovering potential trace amounts of almonds in their products. This undeclared allergen poses a significant risk to individuals with tree nut allergies, prompting swift action from the company and regulatory bodies.

The recall affects 96-ounce containers of Lactaid Milk, including whole, 1 percent, 2 percent, fat-free, and 2 percent calcium-enriched varieties. These products were distributed to retailers and wholesalers between September 5 and September 18, potentially reaching consumers in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Identifying Affected Products

Consumers who have purchased Lactaid Milk are urged to check their product’s lot number and expiration date against the recall notice. The affected products can be identified by the code 51-4109 P2 and specific “best by dates” listed on the FDA website. The code and Best By Date are located in the center-top area of the container.

“The issue was discovered as a result of ‘routine maintenance programs’ which revealed the potential for the trace amounts of almond, the FDA said.”

While no illnesses have been reported thus far, the recall is a precautionary measure to ensure consumer safety. People with almond allergies or severe sensitivity may experience serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume the affected products.

Consumer Actions and Safety Measures

If you have purchased the recalled Lactaid milk, it is crucial to take immediate action to protect yourself and your family. The FDA and HP Hood LLC recommend the following steps:

Stop Consumption Immediately: If you have any recalled Lactaid milk in your possession, do not consume it under any circumstances.”

Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. For those who have consumed the product and are experiencing any adverse reactions, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention. To report any illnesses or to obtain more information about the recall, consumers can contact Hood Consumer Affairs at 1-800-242-2423.

Staying Informed and Future Precautions

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for consumers to stay informed about potential risks. To avoid similar situations in the future, consumers are encouraged to subscribe to recall alerts, regularly check manufacturer websites, and follow reputable news outlets for updates on food safety issues.

As the situation develops, Lactaid is likely to enhance its quality control measures, collaborate closely with regulators, and improve communication with consumers to prevent future recalls. This incident underscores the critical role that food recalls play in protecting public health and the responsibility shared by manufacturers, regulators, and consumers in maintaining food safety standards.
