(Daily360.com) Democratic party voters who stand in opposition to Israel for the ongoing war in Gaza are hopeful that Kamala Harris would take a hardline stance against Israel if she is elected to be the next president of the United States.
Many officials have resigned from President Biden’s administration in response to his support of Israel and Vice President Harris has been a vocal opponent of Israel within the administration. She accused Israel of taking the lives of too many innocent Palestinians in December just two months after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
Protests popped up at college campuses throughout the country in opposition to Israel’s continuation of the war in Gaza. These protestors have called for a ceasefire and Vice President Harris has given vocal support to the campus protesters around the country. In a July statement, Harris said she rejects some of the things that are being said by the protestors, but she completely understands the emotion behind their sentiments.
In an October event that followed the Hamas attack on Israel, Harris applauded the leadership of an individual who condemned Israel for committing genocide in Gaza and targeting innocent civilians. A video from 2021 shows Vice President Harris nodding her head while a student accused Israel of “ethnic genocide.” She said it is important to remember that the student’s truth “cannot be suppressed.”
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress on July 24, but VP Harris has declined to preside over the event. Typically, the VP is in charge of overseeing joint addresses to Congress, but Harris went to Indianapolis for a presidential campaign event instead. Speaker Mike Johnson called Harris’ decision to not attend the address “unconscionable.”
Several other Democratic members of Congress planned to boycott Netanyahu’s address in protest of Israel’s strategy in the ongoing war against Hamas. This includes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, and Ilhan Omar among others. Some estimates show as many as 100 Democratic party members planned to boycott the prime minister’s speech.
