FDA Issues Urgent Recall
The FDA has mandated an urgent recall of multiple mac & cheese products from well-known chain stores due to contamination and labeling errors. The primary concern arises from temperature abuse related to a malfunctioning refrigeration unit, as disclosed by Reser’s Fine Foods. The recalled products are classified under Class II risk, suggesting potential temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
Consumers have been advised not to consume the recalled mac & cheese products, particularly Reser’s American Classics Macaroni & Cheese White Cheddar and Reser’s American Classics Macaroni & Cheese in 12 oz packages. Affected products have been distributed in California, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Reser’s has voluntarily initiated the recall, highlighting the company’s commitment to consumer safety.

Additional Food Recalls This Week
This week’s recall includes other food products with various contamination issues. Brazil nuts and a kimchi product, both identified as Class II risks, have been recalled due to mold and high yeast levels. More concerningly, guacamole, salsa products, and Boar’s Head meat have been pulled from shelves due to listeria contamination, classified as a Class I risk. Listeria poses a severe threat, resulting in nine deaths and numerous hospitalizations across 18 states.
“A situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” – FDA
Recent weeks have seen a spate of recalls, including various cheese products, shredded cheese, and even apple juice. The latter was extended on August 26 to address potential contamination with cancer-causing metals, impacting products sold across 26 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. These events underscore the vulnerabilities within our food supply chain and the paramount importance of stringent quality control measures.
Underlying Risks of Food Contamination
The chemical risks associated with certain food products, such as phthalates in mac & cheese mixes, add another layer of concern. These chemicals, banned from children’s toys, may still be found in high concentrations in powdered cheese products. Phthalates can disrupt male hormones and have been linked to defects in infant boys and learning issues in older children. They migrate into food through packaging and manufacturing processes, posing significant health risks, especially for pregnant women.
“Potentially harmful chemicals that were banned from children’s teething rings and rubber duck toys a decade ago may still be present in high concentrations in your child’s favorite meal: macaroni and cheese mixes made with powdered cheese. The chemicals, called phthalates, can disrupt male hormones like testosterone and have been linked to genital birth defects in infant boys and learning and behavior problems in older children. The chemicals migrate into food from packaging and equipment used in manufacturing and may pose special risks to pregnant”
It is imperative that consumers remain vigilant and heed recall notices to mitigate any potential health risks. These incidents serve as poignant reminders of the essential role that robust regulatory oversight and responsible manufacturing practices play in safeguarding public health.
