Prison Guard Injured During Inmate Incident

(Daily360.com) A prison guard was injured in an altercation with an inmate at an Indiana facility in Miami County.

The incident happened in the late afternoon on July 6, but specific details were not provided regarding the confrontation. An officer was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital for an injury and released. The next morning, the facility announced that it was on lockdown protocol. That means no visitors and volunteers are able to enter the facility until stated otherwise. Authorities are currently investigating the incident and no other details have been provided.

According to research, prison officers are assaulted or violently attacked at a rate of 254 per 10,000 officers. That equates to one officer per 39 that are attacked by inmates in correctional facilities. A March 2024 report indicated that the number of assaults against correctional officers has increased substantially in the state of Massachusetts. There were 711 cases between the years of 2020 and 2023 at state correctional facilities with 25 serious injuries. According to the report, a higher number of attacks occurred in prisons that are considered the most secure in the state.

A representative for the prison officers union stated that attacks on prison guards include bodily fluids, punching, kicking, and continuous verbal assaults. He said the increase in assaults on officers is unlike anything they have ever witnessed.

On the other side of the equation, correctional officers may attack prison inmates with little to no disciplinary action according to a report in New York. From 2010 to 2023, there were 290 instances in which the Department of Corrections in New York attempted to dismiss officers for instigating violent attacks on inmates at correctional facilities. Only 28 of those cases led to the firing of an officer. In one specific case, they attempted to fire an officer for three separate incidents over the course of three years. The officer is still an employee for the correctional facility at the time of the report in 2023.
