(Daily360.com) Bakari Sellers, a former campaign manager for Kamala Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign, said he and other Democratic party officials are excited about the prospect of a Harris campaign to defeat Donald Trump in November. Harris ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 against Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, but dropped out early in the race for a lack of support.
While the Democratic party nominee will not be officially named until the DNC convention in August, Harris issued a statement declaring that she has obtained enough delegate support to secure the nomination. Sellers said he doesn’t foresee the open convention that would have candidates vying for the nomination. He said Harris leading the ticket is the most reasonable choice because she has access to the campaign coffers that have been collected for Biden’s re-election campaign that is now defunct. If another candidate were to be the nominee, he or she would not have access to the funds collected for Biden’s campaign.
An Associated Press poll of the delegates on July 22 found Harris has received the support of more than 1,976 delegates, which is the number needed to become the nominee in the first round of voting at the convention. So far, only Marianne Williamson has stepped up to the plate as a potential candidate for the nomination and she has stated that “nobody should be anointed” as the nominee.
Williamson attempted to run against Biden during the 2024 primary season along with U.S. representative Dean Phillips. She failed to secure any delegates in the process and there were no significant challengers to Biden as the incumbent president.
Shortly after Biden’s announcement that he was dropping out of the race, he endorsed Harris to be the Democratic party’s nominee for president. Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary also released a statement endorsing Harris for the nomination. Polling data gives Trump a 2.5 point advantage in a head-to-head matchup with Harris. That lead increases to six points when RFK Jr. is included in the poll.
