(Daily360.com) An Irish teacher was released after 400 days of imprisonment in a chain of events that began with him refusing the school’s order to use female pronouns for a biological male who identifies as a girl. Enoch Burke was a history and German teacher who was placed on paid leave in August of 2022 for not complying with the school’s order that was handed down in May.
The school began a disciplinary process and Burke continued to visit the school despite a court order. In September 2022, he was found in contempt of court and held in prison. Burke did not plead guilty to contempt of court and they eventually released him after 108 days. The school officially released Burke as a teacher in January 2023, but he continued to visit the school. This led to his arrest and imprisonment once again in September 2023.
The court released him once again on June 28 because Irish schools were on summer vacation. The court did warn Burke that he faces imprisonment if he violates the order to stay away from the school where he was once a teacher. The discussion regarding Burke’s imprisonment and release has two sides that are in strong opposition. One side champions him as a Christian hero for not bowing to the pressure to refer to a biological male as a girl.
The other side of the argument contends that Burke would not have been put in jail for “misgendering” a student, but he was jailed for violating court orders to stay away from the school.
During the initial conflict, the school’s counselor claims that Burke violated the student’s confidence by publicly drawing attention to the demand that teachers use preferred pronouns for their students. Burke raised a religious objection to transgenderism multiple times during the process.
The high court determined the original ruling that the school was authorized to hold disciplinary meetings about Burke for refusing to use preferred pronouns. Burke argued that it was unlawful and a violation of his religious rights.
