(Daily360.com) The FDA announced two serious pet food recalls that can cause infection in pets and can potentially be transferred to humans. The manufacturer of the recalled cat and dog food products is Viva Raw, located in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The products have a potential contamination of listeria monocytogenes and have been sold in all 50 states.
Specifically, the recall includes turkey pet food for dogs, cats, and puppies. According to the FDA, listeria monocytogenes has the potential to cause serious infections and in rare cases can cause death in pets. Possible symptoms include diarrhea, nervousness, muscular and respiratory signs, miscarriage, depression, and death.
Animals that consume food with this contamination can also be asymptomatic carriers to the humans that live in the same household. Human symptoms are similar, but can also include severe reactions like meningitis or possible death. Miscarriages are also possible, so the FDA warns that pregnant women have a greater risk of negative side effects from infection.
As of July 3rd, no infections related to the pet food contamination have been reported. The FDA suggests contacting the company to obtain a refund and disposing of the food so that no children, pets, or wildlife can potentially be exposed. The notice also suggests that people use gloves or paper towels when disposing of the food.
Another pet food recall that has been issued is for Vitakraft Sun Seed, which is sold as hedgehog food. The product has a potential salmonella contamination.
There have been accusations and lawsuits against pet food companies earlier this year for causing the death of family pets. One lawsuit was against Mid America Pet Food, the manufacturer of Victor dog and cat food. The lawsuit by two families alleges the food led to the death of both dogs.
One dog was acting lethargic following consumption of the dog food and began vomiting blood. Upon investigation, the veterinarian recommended euthanizing the dog. Unverified reports have also linked Purina dog foods to as many as 10 dog deaths.
